Skills Matrix Builder
A free skills matrix template you can fill in right here. Add your people and the skills that matter, rate each cell, and see which capabilities your team is actually short on. Nothing is stored — everything stays in your browser.
What a skills matrix tells you
A skills matrix puts people on one axis and required skills on the other, with a rating in each cell. Done once it shows where you are exposed: a skill only one person can do, a role that never reached the target level, a team that looks fine on average but has a single point of failure. Set the target level, fill in honest ratings, and read the coverage numbers below the grid.
Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Download the CSV to keep your matrix.
Your skills matrix
| Person or role | Average |
|---|---|
| Average |
- 0 — No exposure
- 1 — Aware
- 2 — Can do with help
- 3 — Works independently
- 4 — Can coach others
Gaps and coverage
At or above target
0%
Share of all ratings that reach level 3 or higher.
Weakest skills — least coverage first
A matrix shows the gap. It does not close it.
Ratings age the moment you save the file. Metronic turns the same skills into short daily questions, measures proficiency on every answer, and keeps the matrix current without another review meeting.
How to build a skills matrix
- List the skills that actually decide whether the work goes well. Ten to fifteen is usually enough; a matrix nobody finishes is worse than a short one.
- List the people or roles you are assessing. Use roles when you care about coverage, names when you care about development.
- Set the target level. Level 3 — works independently — is the usual bar for a fully trained team member.
- Rate each cell against evidence, not impression. A rating you cannot defend with an example is a guess.
- Read the coverage numbers. Any skill where only one person is at target is a single point of failure, whatever the average says.
- Download the CSV, then re-rate on a fixed schedule. A matrix that is never updated stops being true within a quarter.
